Binding Advice

If you are having a multipage brochure or booklet professionally printed, you need to make sure you also have it professionally bound. This not only ensures that your message reaches your customers and clients in the right order, it also adds to the overall professional look of the document, not to mention increases its longevity.

There are two main ways to bind your document, and the choice depends mainly on the thickness of the document, and the look you want to achieve with the finished product. Your first option is saddle stitch binding where your document will be stapled, or ‘stitched’ through the middle fold of the sheets.

Saddle stitch is a good option for shorter documents, and those printed on a lower gsm of paper as the stitching is more to hold the paper together, and can bow or fall open at the centre pages when used on thicker stock.

Your other option for a multi page brochure or booklet is spiral binding, like you see in notebooks. All the pages of your document will be punched with holes, where the spiral of wire or plastic will be threaded through to hold the pages together.

You can spiral bind the smallest or largest document and the plastic or metal binding comes in a range of colours, materials and looks to suit your printing project. Spiral binding also gives you the opportunity to use a clear or heavier gsm cover front and back to make your printing project more durable.

A spiral bound booklet is also easier to read and reread and this makes it a good format for Annual Reports or product brochures which will be flipped through and referred to again.
