The Rule of Six Exposure

You can have the best quality printing, the best slogan and the coolest logo, but none of that will get you anywhere if your message isn’t getting through. While you may think that getting into your potential customers’ mailboxes is enough, you need to remember that until they have seen your message at least six times, they won’t remember it.

So on top of your snazzy slogan and professionally printed mail outs, you need to be persistent. While it may not take exactly six goes to be noticed by all of the recipients of your mail outs, six persistent mail outs does account for your leaflets and flyers getting lost in the mail, lost in the mounds of office paper on your potential customers’ desks, being disregarded by an overzealous secretary, and it simply not being the time when the recipients need your services.

If you’re still not convinced that you need to go to so much effort in repeatedly mailing out your message to potential customers, take a moment to think about the amount of mail you get on your doorstep, and across your desk, and how often you see the same names of companies and services popping up. Well, it could be your name popping up in front of your next big client so stock with it.

Your message and your medium depend on your business, but make sure that each of your six messages is the same, yet different. The same logo, the same colour scheme and maybe even the same tag line will ensure your company is recognised from previous mail outs. Different offers, photos, shapes, sizes or formats will ensure that your message is not immediately disregarded as the ‘same old’ but is read each time as it seems to be saying something unique.

Whether you send a funky modern postcard to your potential customers to save on stuffing and sealing envelopes, or use an official looking C4 envelope, covering letter and proposal depends entirely on the type of customers you are targeting. Depending on the business and the industry, one may have a better chance of getting past a secretary, where another will have more chance of being noticed in the clutter of mail.
